Pair escape injury in Monmouth rollover

No injuries were reported in a single-vehicle rollover that occurred about 6:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. Route 202 in Monmouth.

Monmouth Police Chief Kevin Mulherin said Joy Stanton, 52, of Saco, the driver, and her boyfriend, Derek Bonenfant, 40, of Winthrop, a passenger, were heading west along U.S. 202.

“Basically what happened was there was some sort of internal distraction in the vehicle,” Mulherin said. “She went off towards the ditch on her side, overcorrected and crossed lanes, ending up in the ditch and flipping over on the other side of the road.”

There was no oncoming traffic, Mulherin said. He said Winthrop Ambulance personnel checked Stanton at the scene.

The GMC Envoy Stanton was driving was destroyed, Mulherin said, and traffic was reduced to one lane for 20 to 30 minutes as emergency responders dealt with the crash.
