SKOWHEGAN — Police said a Madison man was arrested Tuesday morning after he smashed up a hospital room, causing more than $3,000 in damage.

Derek Allen Kunz, 20, was taken into custody shortly before 9 a.m. at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

Police Chief Ted Blais said Kunz was a patient at the hospital. Blais said Kunz smashed furniture in the room and punched holes in the walls.

“He was a guy that was in crisis,” he said.

Kunz was taken to the Somerset County Jail in East Madison, where he was being held in lieu of $2,500 cash bail, according to a jail intake worker.

The amount of damage to the hospital room is listed at $3,334, according to Blais. Kunz is charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and as much as $5,000 in fines. Blais said the charge is aggravated because of the amount of damage.

Kunz had not been to court as of late Tuesday afternoon, according to the jail worker. He could be assigned a court-appointed lawyer Wednesday when he makes his first appearance in court.
