FAIRFIELD — Mary Yurlina and Kate Newkirk, of MOFGA Certification Services, LLC, will present What is Organic from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Kennebec Valley Community College, Frye Conference Room, lower level Frye Hall, 92 Western Ave.
Yurlina is the director of MOFGA’s Certification Services LLC. She holds a doctorate in ecology and evolution, and is fond of native pollinators, mushrooms and retired landfills. Newkirk is the associate director of processing and handling at MOFGA Certification Services, LLC. She runs WinterGreens Herbs and Vegetables, in Winslow.
The pair will provide an overview of the National Organic Program rule. They will discuss how the regulation addresses the time honored principles of organic agriculture as well the controversies regarding the regulation and its promulgation. Maine’s organic agricultural scene will also be part of the conversation.
