A report early Friday of a domestic dispute involving a handgun at a house in Cape Elizabeth ended with a man’s apparent suicide, police said.

Police were called to the home on Wells Road at 12:19 a.m. Friday. While speaking with one of the occupants in the driveway, police heard two gunshots, said Chief Neil Williams. Police got a tenant in an upstairs apartment out of the building.

Police summoned the South Portland-Scarborough-Cape Elizabeth special response team, which deployed a robot at 2:45 a.m. to investigate inside the house after efforts to contact the person inside were unsuccessful.

The robot enabled police to determine that the man inside was dead and had a handgun.

The state medical examiner will make the final determination on the manner of death, Williams said. The man’s identity was being withheld until his family could be notified.

Police remained at the house for several hours. Nobody else was injured.

Williams said the initial dispute grew out of a discussion between two men about moving out of state.
