NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Cellphone and Internet service has been knocked out in a western Massachusetts town after radio towers on top of a nearby mountain collapsed amid high winds and heavy rain.
The North Adams Department of Public Safety used the city Police Department’s Facebook page to make the announcement on Sunday. It says interruptions in cellphone and Internet service are significant.
A police dispatcher said a portable tower and transmitters are being installed to provide crucial communications for the city of about 13,500 residents.
The North Adams Police Department says it will monitor its Facebook page if anyone is unable to contact Public Safety by telephone. It says it’s unknown how long it will take to correct this problem.
Weekend rains are being blamed for localized flooding and road closures throughout the northeast. The National Weather Service says more than 5 inches of rain was reported in parts of Rhode Island.
