I would like to talk about Rep. Jeff McCabe, D-Skowhegan. He is my neighbor, and I have known him for more than 10 years. He is a hardworking advocate for the people of Skowhegan and for the environment. Recently he proposed a law advocating a 25-foot setback for fertilizer use around lakes. This is an eminently sensible rule, as too much fertilizer is one of the big reasons that lakes succumb to algae and eutrophication. There should be some kind of buffer around the lake, and 25 feet is not a lot to ask of landowners in order to keep their lakes clean. That bill was vetoed, unfortunately. McCabe has sponsored a lot of bills that have protected the environment. The “brand” of Maine is our clean waters, mountains and seashores. We need to protect that and are glad to have a strong advocate in Augusta with Jeff McCabe.
