ELLSWORTH — Authorities say an 81-year-old Ellsworth man suffered a medical emergency and died before crashing into a utility pole in an accident that knocked out power to most of the city’s downtown.

WNSX-FM reports Edward McFarland was apparently dead before crashing on Water Street on Tuesday morning. Police told the station McFarland was in a minivan at 8:30 a.m. when he crashed into the pole near Dave’s Towing. The vehicle then hit a tow truck parked nearby.

Emera Maine is responding to replace the broken pole and expects to fully restore power by later Tuesday. Water Street is closed as a result of the incident.
