Area residents graduate from Colby College

WATERVILLE — Area residents were among 472 seniors who graduated from Colby College recently receiving bachelor of arts degrees at the College’s 193rd Commencement recently. As guest speaker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick spoke about the importance of presence in a rapidly changing world. “Human intimacy,” he said, “still depends on looking someone in the eye, touching them, actively listening, being present.” Colby President William D. Adams, presiding over his last commencement before stepping down June 30, handed a diploma to each of the graduates.

Local residents are: Emma L. Bailey, of Oakland, is the daughter of Margaret Libby, of Oakland. Bailey majored in classics and classical civilization.

Devin E. Gibbs, of Waterville, is the son of Michelle Holmes of Waterville, and Eric Gibbs, of Harker Heights, Texas. Gibbs majored in music and biology.

Joseph D. Harwood, of Augusta, is the son of William and Linda Harwood, of Augusta. Harwood majored in computer science.

Dana W. Merk-Wynne, of Waterville, is the daughter of Carol Wynne and David Merk, of Waterville. Mek-Wynne majored in creative writing (independent).

Stephen C. Morse, of South China, is the son of Catherine Proulx, of South China. Morse majored in mathematics.

John A. Nivison III, of Winslow, is the son of John and Wendy Nivison, of Winslow. Nivision majored in English with a concentration in creative writing and government.
