A coalition of Maine fire departments will receive about $225,000 in federal grants to train emergency medical technicians in community paramedicine.
Community paramedicine is a model that expands the role of paramedics to assist people in accessing primary care options. Primary care options can be less expensive than frequent trips to emergency rooms.
The fire departments are located in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, and Westbrook. The money will help train and certify 24 emergency medical technicians in community paramedicine.
The money is awarded through a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant.
