Messalonskee in line for Cal Ripken 12U title

SKOWHEGAN — Messalonskee put itself in a great spot to win the Cal Ripken 12U State Tournament Monday thanks to its 3-1 victory over Andy Valley in the winners bracket finals at the Carl Wright Complex on Monday.

Messalonskee will once again face Andy Valley — who defeated host Skowhegan 4-2 in the consolation bracket finals to make the title game — today at 3:30 p.m. In the event Andy Valley wins, the two teams will play again at 5:30 p.m. in a winner-take-all game for the championship.

In Monday’s contest Dylan Cunningham had a home run and picked up the save for Messalonskee, while Jake Perry finished with a pair of singles. Jonathan Christopher chipped in with a single and Travis Hosea was the winning pitcher.

For Andy Valley, Jake Mills had a home run, while Keegan Chase and Bryce Simpson each had doubles.

While Messalonskee’s tournament will continue, Skowhegan’s strong run through the consolation bracket came to an end.

After falling to Andy Valley 10-1 in its tournament opener, Skowhegan won three games in a row to make the consolation finals. Earlier Monday it defeated Ararat 8-3 behind two-hit performances from Marcus Christopher — who had a home run — Coby Miller and winning pitcher Carter Hunt.

In Skowhegan’s tournament finale against Andy Valley Coby Miller belted a home run, Christopher had a double and Ryan Savage chipped in with a single.
