Oakland man charged in Mount Vernon burglary

An Oakland man has been charged in connection with a break-in at a Mount Vernon store last winter.

Douglas William Hanson, 38, has been charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violating conditions of release in connection with a Feb. 7 break-in at Flying Pond Variety store.

According to court documents filed by state police Trooper Samuel Tlumac, the store was burglarized shortly before 2 a.m. by a man wearing an orange ski mask and gloves and carrying a claw hammer. Surveillance video also showed a maroon sedan that had been reported stolen from Waterville the day before.

Tlumac wrote that the physical characteristics of the man in the surveillance video matched Hanson, who was a suspect in the stolen-vehicle investigation.

Oakland police found the maroon sedan at Hanson’s home. Police found an orange ski mask, black gloves and a claw hammer inside. Those items, and others found in the car, were sent to the crime laboratory for testing. Those tests confirmed that Hanson’s DNA was on the items, Tlumac wrote.
