FARMINGTON — The teens of the New Hope Baptist Church will present the original play “Mountains on the Prairie” at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 18,-20 at the church, at 268 Perham St. Under the direction of Sandi Rebert, the teens have been working diligently since January on this drama.

The story takes place in 1850 in the fictional town of Prairie View, Wy. It centers around a Christian young lady, Verna Nickerson (Janna Winslow) whose great-uncle Silas, a retired doctor (Brian Hand), has suggested the town vote her in to be the school teacher for their children (Joy Andrews, Lydia Andrews, Faith Bishop, Chris Decker, Lydia Doyle, Jessie Johnson, Jared Winslow, John Curtis Winslow and Madison Yates).

Of course, there is an antagonist, Clyde Davison (Hunter Bachelder) who doesn’t like much of anything or anyone, a protagonist, Clayton Mitchell (Daniel Parker) who tries to be an encouragement to the new teacher, and a few comic characters to help balance some of the more intense moments — Sadie Willis (Lindsy Hilton), whose specialty is being helpful, or rather — meddling, Frank Crandall (Zeke Bishop) who is convinced he should be the town’s mayor, and Russell Smith (Matt Parker) who can’t help laughing at his own inept jokes. There are lots of unique characters, difficult situations to overcome, and twists in the plot, as well as some special effects in store for the audience in this family-friendly production. Other cast members include Frank’s wife, Patience (Ruth Andrew), Russell’s wife, Emma (Marissa Yates), Clyde’s wife Celia (Keirra Yates), store owner Andrew Foster (Ezra Hawkins) and his wife, Kate (Destiney Decker), Nagamao (Parker Bachelder) and her daughter, Winona (Haven Doyle), Edith Wilson (Heather Wheeler) and her daughter, Ellie (Alexandria Schleier).

Charlene Conant and Heather Wheeler help as assistants to the director. Peggy Pinkham and Michelle Winslow have outfitted the cast in authentic costumes. The teens, with some adult supervision, built the two-story detailed set.
