AUGUSTA — The summer crush of cats has the Kennebec Valley Humane Society waiving adoption fees for adult cats for the next several weeks.

Executive Director Hillary Roberts said in a release that the program will run through Sept. 1 and applies to any cat 7 months or older.

“While cats and kittens are available for adoption any time of the year, summer is the busiest time in terms of number of cats and kittens arriving at our shelter,” Roberts said. “Waiving the fees for an extended period helps us to alleviate the many stresses that an overcrowded animal shelter can cause for the animals we serve.”

The shelter has more than 50 adult cats and more than 75 kittens. The animals are kept both in the shelter and in foster homes. Every animal available for adoption through the shelter has been spayed or neutered and are up to date on routine vaccinations. Roberts said those services can exceed $100.

Research shows those who adopt fee-waived cats have the same attachment to their new pets as other adopters, Roberts said. The animals are not devalued in the eyes of the new families. The program can dramatically decrease the number of cats in the shelter during the busy months, which can cause illness due to the stress of overcrowding.

“Very simply, our goal is to save more lives of cats,” Roberts said. “To do this we are turning to community members to come in to our shelter and open their hearts and homes to a new pet.”

The shelter has photos of animals up to for adoption on its website, PetHavenLane.org.
