Driver hurt in crash; family escapes injury

A Monmouth man was flown to a Lewiston hospital, but his family was unhurt, after a Tuesday morning crash on Route 132.

Shawn Schultz, 37, was taken by a LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a leg injury, said Monmouth Police Chief Kevin Mulherin. The injury was not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. on Route 132 shortly after Schultz and his family crossed the Wales town line into Monmouth.

“We believe he fell asleep,” Mulherin said.

The Honda Pilot drifted off the road and hit a large tree, trapping Schultz inside his vehicle, Mulherin said. Schultz’s wife and their three children, two of whom were in car seats, were able to get out of the car unassisted. All suffered minor bumps and bruises, Mulherin said.

Mulherin said a report did not indicate how long Schultz was trapped inside the vehicle.

The family was returning from Pennsylvania and were asleep at the time of the crash.

“That’s probably why nobody else was hurt except for bumps and bruises,” Mulherin said.

The Pilot was destroyed.

Route 132 was reduced to one lane in the area as crews tended to the injured and removed the vehicle.

Mulherin said no charges were filed in connection with the crash.
