SOUTH PORTLAND — Defending champion Matt Greenleaf was eliminated in the second round of the state match play championship golf tournament, at Sable Oaks Golf Course on Tuesday.
The four semifinal matches, set for Wednesday morning are: Mike Doran (Sable Oakes) vs. Joe Alvarez (Sanford); Brian Angis (Biddeford-Saco) vs. Ricky Jones (Samoset); Jeff Cole (York) vs. Eric Crouse (Falmouth) and Scott Sirois (Woodlands) vs. Jack Wyman (Portland). Play is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.
Angis defeated Greenleaf, 2 and 1, in the second round to advance. Luke Ruffing of Natanis lost to Crouse, 2 up, in the second round. Ruffing defeated Ashley Fifield, 2 and 1, in the first round.
Andrew Slattery, who won the Maine Amateur title last month at the Woodlands, was upset in the first round by Mike O’Brien, 2 up. Thomas Bean of Augusta lost to Cole in the first round, 4 and 2. Jason Gall of Augusta was eliminated by Tommy Stirling in the first round, 3 and 2.
The longest match of the day came in the second round. Jones need 21 holes to defeat John Hayes IV, who won the match play title in 2012 at Natanis.
