LEWISTON — Great weather is expected to boost attendance to the Great Falls Balloon Festival this weekend.

The festival draws about 100,000 people each year and warm, sunny skies are on tap for the entire event, which began on Friday and is continuing with launches Saturday and Sunday.

The 22nd annual festival is being held at the Simard and Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston. The Androscoggin River and the rocky Great Falls serve as a backdrop for the event, which featured more than a dozen hot-air balloons.

One popular balloon company was not part of the program. Festival organizers rescinded the invitation to the owner of a balloon that crashed into power lines in Massachusetts, injuring several people last month.
