The east-west highway proposal should not be an issue. At best, it would be sad to waste millions of acres of beautiful land.

The state of Maine already has a perfectly good east-west highway — U.S. Route 2.

This proposed highway is a very expensive option. The private property that would have to be purchased would be expensive. The miles of road that already exist, however, would offset much of the cost.

What about the Golden Road — 100 miles of beautiful land that already has been ruined. The paper companies have stripped the wood and 36 miles of wilderness have already been paved.

The Millinocket mills have closed. Why waste millions of acres of our beautiful Maine woods adding another road to nothing?

If Cianbro and Pete Vigue want another money-making venture, let them go to Canada and lay waste to the Canadian wilderness. Maine citizens already pay too high a price for Canadian lumber, lobsters, power, jobs and rights. We are not allowed in Canada without a passport, but Canadians are free to come and go here. Why? Tourist dollars?
