AUBURN — A Sudanese immigrant who attacked his wife with a knife has reached a plea agreement in which prosecutors dismissed a charge of attempted murder.

Forty-three-year-old Deng Mirac of Lewiston entered a plea of no contest to a charge of aggravated assault on Wednesday. A judge ordered him to serve two years in prison.

The Sun Journal reported that Mirac spoke in Arabic through an interpreter, telling the judge that he simply wanted the case to end. He also said he wants to return to his native country.

The prosecutor said the two had been separated for six months when Mirac’s estranged wife, Adut Adong, was attacked. She told the judge that she suffers flashbacks and still wonders why she was attacked.
