The federal government is dedicating $800,000 to clean up contaminated brownfield sites in Maine.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is allocating the money from its revolving loan fund to the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. The state economic development agency will receive $500,000 and the Piscataquis County agency will get the rest.

The money will support the clean-up and redevelopment of brownfield sites, which are former industrial properties that need to be remediated before they can used again for new projects.
