After reading your article in the newspaper, “St. Mark’s Home in Augusta set to close,” on Aug. 25 about the closing of this lovely home for these lovely women, I wondered what I could do to stop this closing.

I live in Naples, and I am retired. I am also a nurse and find it hard to imagine these women having to move at their ages when they are perfectly happy where they are living. This home sounds just like the best place for these independent women to live.

Perhaps someone could start a fundraising project to raise money to keep the home open or have people volunteer their time. I know I would be willing to give a little time, to do things like cook a few meals. I live some distance away but could do this once or twice a month. I think others might want to help, too.

These very special women are fortunate that they do not have to be in a nursing home. I understand how they feel about living with family, since I also want to remain independent when the time comes that I need a little help with daily living.
