Teams of volunteers are cleaning up more than 50 illegal garbage dumping sites in Maine as a way to thank landowners who allow access to private lands for recreational activities.

The Landowner Appreciation Cleanup Day drive is taking place on Saturday. Maine forest rangers worked in cooperation with the Maine Snowmobile Association, ATV Maine, other recreational groups and the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to assemble teams to clean up the sites.

State officials say access to the lands is jeopardized by illegal dumping and littering.
