Two boys were hurt when their car apparently went off the road and sideswiped a tree about 5 p.m. Thursday on Lovejoy Pond Road, officials said.

Maine State Police Trooper John York said the passenger, who appeared to have the more serious injuries, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by Winthrop Ambulance and later was being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The driver of the Subaru was cleared by paramedics at the scene, York said. He declined to identify the boys because of their ages but said they lived in the Fayette area and were apparently leaving a rehearsal for “Grease,” which is being produced in November by Maranacook Community High School.

He said both boys were wearing seat belts.

Maine State Police were reconstructing the scene of the crash.

“Nothing appears out of the ordinary,” York said. “We’re trying to figure out what led to the distraction that caused the loss of control.”

Fayette Fire Chief Marty Maxwell said firefighters from Fayette and Readfield were assisting at the scene and that Wayne firefighters were called in to assist with traffic control.

The road had to be closed for the reconstruction.
