BIDDEFORD — A department store that had to close because it was sinking into the ground is reopening in Biddeford.

A 66,000-square-foot Kohl’s Department Store is set open on Friday. It was built to replace an 11-year-old store that had to be demolished after sinking into the ground.

Roger Frechette, assistant code enforcement officer, said the new store is on the same lot as the old one, built in 2003, that closed last winter and was razed.

It’s unusual for a relatively new building to have to be torn down. Town officials said the old structure began sinking after it was built in 2003 because the wrong fill was used at the site.
