I totally agree with Carroll Ware (letter, Aug. 8) that the fair bear hunt referendum is not about hunting. It is about the cruel and abusive methods of hunting that are allowed under Maine’s hunting laws. It is also about preventing unnecessary suffering.
Opponents of fair bear hunting justify their position by saying that trapping, hounding and baiting are based on sound research and science. If that is the case, then Maine’s science and research must differ from all the other 49 states’ research and science.
Maine is the only state that allows all three of these egregious methods to kill our treasured Maine bear.
