An accident in the southbound lanes of the Maine Turnpike in Augusta slowed traffic for nearly two hours Thursday morning.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. For a time emergency crews responding to the scene closed both southbound lanes, routing traffic to a breakdown lane.

The left lane remained closed until 7:50 a.m., while crews finished removing debris from the roadway.

The accident happened between the end of the turnpike at mile 109 and Exit 103 in West Gardiner.
