BATH — The Navy says a stealthy warship under construction at Maine’s Bath Iron Works is more than 90 percent complete.
The shipbuilder completed the “light-off” of one the first of two turbines last week, an important milestone. Testing will continue this fall with activation of the ship’s computer system.
Capt. Jim Downey, the program manager, said the shipbuilder is following a deliberate process for preparing the ship for at-sea testing off the Maine coast in the coming year.
The 610-foot-long warship can produce 78 megawatts, enough electricity for about 10,000 homes. It’s the first electric-drive surface combatant built for the U.S. Navy since a line of smaller destroyer escorts in the 1940s. It’ll feature new guns designed for shore bombardment, along with other weapons.
