LEWISTON — Court officials say a judge has been assigned to the case of a Lewiston man charged with running down and killing his pregnant girlfriend before trying to flee to Haiti.

Justice MaryGay Kennedy will hear the case of Evaristo Deus, who is being held without bail. His girlfriend, Laudrinha Kubeloso, was four months pregnant when she was struck from behind by an SUV and later pronounced dead. Deus is charged with murder.

Court officials say it is still unclear when or if Deus will have a bail hearing. He has also not been assigned a court date. His attorney did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. The attorney has said Deus will enter a not guilty plea.
