Unfunded liability, a massive problem for the Maine Public Employees Retirement System. Lawmakers accepted the unions’ demands, promising increases without sufficient revenue. Unions didn’t increase their contributions, so by 2011, unfunded liabilities reached $4 billion. These actions were irresponsible.

Maine pensions needed reform. Meanwhile, the governor’s opponents, instead of blaming the irresponsibility of former leaders, attacked LePage.
