Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck said at a news conference Thursday that the assault on a young child in East Bayside was not an assault by a stranger.

Police were called to an East Bayside apartment at 3 a.m. for a burglary. A man had broken in and assaulted a young child. An adult in the home was roused and interrupted the crime and the suspect fled, according to Sauschuck.

Sauschuck declined to give the age of the child or the victim’s address out of concern about identifying the child.

Sauschuck said police continue to seek leads in their efforts to find 25-year-old Julian M. Soto, of Greenleaf Street, who police described as a person of interest but Sauschuck said is not considered a suspect.

Police urge anyone who knows about Soto’s whereabouts to call 874-8575.

The chief would not disclose investigative details of the case because of the ongoing investigation.
