The Capital Region Salvation Army of Augusta participated in a Kettle Blitz Thursday as part of a one-day competition among Salvation Army corps units in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Using a theme of ugly sweaters, the local corps hoped to raised $1,000 at the Augusta Walmart.

In a news release, the Salvation Army reported that income from the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is lagging behind expectations. Thursday’s event was meant to “draw attention to society’s casualties, individuals and families who are struggling to survive,” the release said.

Money gathered each Christmas season helps people with food, clothes and toys for children.
