RICHMOND — Offensive rebounds and tight defense were the keys for the Richmond High School girls basketball team in a 44-28 win over Valley on Wednesday. The Bobcats grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and forced 27 turnovers to take the East/West Conference win.

“We’ve been pretty successful for most of the season crashing the boards offensively,” Richmond coach Mike Ladner said. “That’s probably the best our 2-2-1 (zone) has been all year. We’ve been working on it the last few weeks. It also helped that we had a couple of practices to work on it.”

Richmond (11-5) used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to take control of the game early. Ahead 25-10 at the half, a 9-0 run in the third quarter pushed the Bobcats lead to 36-15.

“It was fun. We played together. Energy was high, and we incorporated it into our shots, defense, and communication,” said Richmond freshman Sydney Titon, who scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, including seven offensive.

Because of injury and illness, Valley (6-11) played without four starters. Senior KyLa White was the lone Cavalier starter in the lineup.

“The other girls, they’re doing well, trying to pick up what they can,” Valley coach Paul Belanger said. “We left a lot of shots in the paint. When you play good teams, you’ve got to capitalize on the easy ones.”

Julie Plummer came off the bench and scored seven points for Richmond. Charlie Savoy led Valley with seven points.
