A car belonging to a Michigan man accused of killing his wife was found Saturday in the parking lot of a Walmart in Farmington by local police.

The light green Subaru was discovered by Officer Justin Blais of the Farmington Police Department on Saturday, said Bonnie Pomeroy, office manager for the Farmington Police Department.

Harold Knight, 66, is wanted in Michigan for allegedly strangling his wife, 48-year-old Sara Lee Knight, at their home in Ganges Township.

He was reportedly seen in Maine in January, although at the time police would not say where. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on the charge of murder.

Pomeroy said Farmington police have received no reports that anyone has seen Knight, and they aren’t sure if he is still in the area.

On Saturday, Blais responded to a report that a car had been in the Walmart parking lot a long time, had no license plates and was covered with about five inches of snow, Pomeroy said.

“It appeared to be abandoned,” she said.

She said when Blais scanned the vehicle identification number, it came back to Knight.

Farmington police reported the Subaru to Maine State Police and it has been impounded, Pomeroy said.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state police, could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Authorities believe the car had been abandoned since around Jan. 16, according to Capt. Frank Baker of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan.

“It’s really hard to speculate,” Baker said Thursday. “It looks like the date the vehicle was abandoned was back in January, so it’s possible he’s still in Maine, but it’s also possible he’s left the area. I think he realizes the public is watching for him and as a result of that maybe wanted to change vehicles.”

Police also believe Knight has dyed his mustache and hair black to alter his appearance. He has hazel eyes, weighs about 265 pounds and is 6-feet, 4 inches.

The Knights had ties to Maine and lived in Turner, several miles south of Farmington, for several years while Sara Knight worked at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Baker said Knight is considered dangerous.

“That’s why we’re asking anyone if they do see him or spot him to not take any action on their own but to notify law enforcement,” Baker said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office at 269-673-0500.
