Members of the Wilton Fish & Game Association’s fourth annual ice derby is set for 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. The derby will be held in memory of Michael J. Rowe, who was killed in a tragic woods accident last year, according to a news release from the association. Rowe, the son of Jeff and Deb Rowe, of Wilton, was an avid ice fishermen.

Registration tickets for the derby can be purchased at Shelly’s Hometown Market in East Wilton, Mosher’s Seafood in Farmington, or at the registration shack at the Wilson Lake Boat Launch the day of the derby. Final weigh-in is at 4 p.m. This is a free fishing day (no fishing license required) throughout Maine through the MDIFW.

WF&G members and Brittany Humphrey, from the MDIFW, will sponsor the Hooked on Fishing Program. The free program is an opportunity for a hands-on learning experience. No experience required and equipment is provided. If weather permits, there will be an area for ice skating and a fire.

The WF&G youth shooting league will have a food booth on site. Prizes are available for all registered participants. In the cold water category for adults the heaviest fish will receive a cash prize of $150. The remaining species with the heaviest fish will win $25, a Jet Sled donated by Sandy River Farm Supply, and fishing rod or $25, two nights camping at Natanis Pt. Campground and Fishing Rod. In the youth categories of Togue, Trout, Salmon, Pickerel and Bass, the winner with the heaviest fish will receive a wooden commemorative box of Max Traps donated by Brian Maxham of East Dixfield in memory of Michael J. Rowe.

Maxham offers great support for youth fishing and encourages youth in any way he can. He also is donating a surprise gift for the youth that pulls in the smallest fish in one of the five categories. Maxham said this will create great excitement for the youth whether catching the heaviest or smallest fish. In the other remaining categories, the heaviest fish will receive $25, one Max Trap with line generously donated by Wood-Mizer LLC Sponsor in Chesterville, Bucket Buddy by Warren Bryant and two movie passes from Narrow Gauge Cinema. Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine will give a free Youth Lifetime Fishing License to the lucky winner in the door prize drawings.

The members of the WF&G are hoping for a great turnout and having fun down on the ice. For further information, call 778-2450.
