AUGUSTA — A bill that’s moving forward in the Maine legislature would create an alert system that notifies officials and the public when a law enforcement officer is injured or killed.
Republican Sen. Scott Cyrway’s measure would create a Blue Alert program in Maine. The measure was recently unanimously approved by the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
It will now be considered by the full House and Senate.
Cyrway says that the state needs to be prepared in case such a situation arises.
The program would ensure that first responders throughout the state are immediately notified if a law enforcement officer is attacked. If the Department of Public Safety determines that it would be helpful, the public would also be notified.
Twenty one states already have Blue Alert programs.
