An 18-year-old South Portland man is being treated for a serious stab wound and another was treated for a gunshot wound following an altercation Wednesday night.

South Portland police say the two were involved in an altercation in the parking lot of the Wainwright Recreation Complex on Highland Avenue at 10:45 p.m.

Police said the two men did not injure each other and that they are friends. After the incident, they drove to Mercy Hospital in Portland before the stabbing victim was transferred to Maine Medical Center.

The stabbing victim is expected to survive and the 19-year-old shooting victim, also from South Portland, has already been released from the hospital.

Police said the incident was not a random act of violence, but did not describe the relationship between the two injured men or what the confrontation was about.
