Nine new Maine State Police troopers received their badges on Friday during a ceremony at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, according to a press release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Among the graduates are five from local communities:

• Jeffrey Parks of Whitefield is a former Westbrook police officer who also served in the Navy. Parks graduated from Erskine Academy in China and from the Citadel.

• Klayton Peckham of West Gardiner is a member of the Maine Army National Guard who graduated from Gardiner High School and the University of Maine at Augusta.

• Eric Sucy of Belgrade is a former Houlton police officer who graduated from Messalonskee High School and Thomas College. He also served in the Air Force.

• Travis Luce of Winthrop is a former reserve officer for the Mexico and Winthrop police departments. He is a graduate of Winthrop High School and is attending Husson University.

The troopers completed 10 weeks of training and will now patrol with a veteran trooper before setting out on their own.

“Your reputation is your name, and your name is your bond,” Col. Robert Williams told the new troopers. “You get only one name and if you ruin it, you can’t get another.”

State police continue to seek men and women interested in a career. Applications and information are available at www.maine.gov/dps/msp.
