Hannaford Supermarkets is recalling packages of pine nuts that the company said could be contaminated with salmonella.

The pine nuts, packaged by Superior Nuts & Candy of Chicago, are sold in store produce departments in 4-ounce packages that have a clear front and a tan colored label on the back, the company said. The label on the back lists pine nuts as the only ingredient and lists “best by” dates from Oct. 22, 2015, through Dec. 27, 2015. The company said the UPC number of the product is 72543920016.

The potential for contamination with salmonella was picked up in random tests of the nuts by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Hannaford said it has removed the product from its shelves and anyone who purchased the pine nuts can return the package to a Hannaford store for a full refund.

Salmonella is a bacteria that sickens people and commonly causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours after infaction, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illness typically lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, the CDC says, but in same cases, those who contract the infection need to hospitalized. Severe cases can be fatal if not treated.
