Thanks for a nice story on Seth Williams, with his descendant Captain Fuller (“Augusta native played big role in Appomattox surrender,” April 9).
Your readers may want to know about Jay Winik’s book, “April 1865 — The month that saved America.” This is the story of the Civil War’s end, as it actually happened, not the shorthand version we heard in high school. Hint: It didn’t end at Appamatox.
The book is unusually well written. I shared it with several relatives and they all raved about it. It has an especially inspiring ending. The story makes many of the leading characters seem even more admirable than the textbooks lead us to think. Since we’ve had major difficulty in ending wars lately, this book may contain some lessons useful even today.
