AUGUSTA – Gov. Paul LePage announced his new top legal adviser as well as three new members of his policy team Monday.
Cynthia Montgomery will serve as chief legal counsel to the governor, filling the role formerly held by Carlisle McLean before she was appointed to the Maine Public Utilities Commission in February.
Montgomery, who was appointed to the post last month, worked as labor relations specialist, counsel and then chief counsel in the Maine Bureau of Employee Relations. She previously represented the federal government in discrimination cases as an attorney with the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission and worked as a union representative and in-house counsel for the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, Local 623.
The LePage administration also formally announced several policy advisers:
• Aaron Chadbourne will serve as senior policy adviser to the governor on regulations and legislation related to education, taxation, defense, veterans and emergency management and government operations. Chadbourne previously worked as a management consultant at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
• Avery Day will serve as a senior policy adviser to the governor on the environment, agriculture, conservation and forestry, inland fisheries and wildlife, and marine resources-related legislation and regulation. Day previously worked as an attorney and lobbyist at Pierce Atwood.
• Lance Libby will serve as LePage’s transportation policy adviser as well as legislative policy coordinator. He replaces Jonathan Nass, who was recently named deputy commissioner in the Maine Department of Transportation. Libby worked at Waterville Country Club and Marden’s Surplus and Salvage before joining LePage’s office in 2011.
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said there are currently two vacancies the governor’s office out of a potential staff of 24.
