AUGUSTA — Maine’s highest court has upheld the conviction of a Tenants Harbor man sentenced to 45 years in prison for fatally shooting his drug supplier.
Andrew Kierstead was sentenced last year of the September 2012 slaying of Richard Mills, of Cushing.
Prosecutors say Kierstead told them he shot Mills because Mills had hooked him on drugs but then cut him off for not paying a $250 drug debt.
WABI-TV reports that Kierstead said in his appeal to the Supreme Judicial Court that statements he made to police during the investigation should have been dismissed as evidence at trial because he was drunk when he made them.
But the high court rejected that argument, saying he made the statements voluntarily and there was sufficient evidence that he was not impaired.
