AUGUSTA — Motorists can now get replacement titles online.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap on Friday announced the new service offered by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles at www.maine.gov/online/bmv/mvtr.

In a news release, Dunlap said, the service “is ideal for those whose vehicle titles have been lost, misplaced, or become illegible.”

Previously, replacement title requests had to be mailed to the bureau’s main office in Augusta for processing.

“Now, the online request will immediately be sent to the main office, a new title number will be issued and the title will be mailed out within just a few days,” the release said.

To request a replacement title delivered via U.S. mail, the title owner must have a valid Maine driver’s license or state ID card. If the title lists a lien holder, the lien first must be released and the BMV notified.

Information needed for replacement titles includes vehicle year, vehicle identification number, mileage, name, date of birth and driver license number of all owners, and credit or debit card information for payment.
