The director of Gardiner Public Library has declared Friday Charlene Wagner Day at the library in honor of the longtime children’s librarian, who is retiring after 35 years.

Director Anne Davis said Wagner instilled a love of reading to several generations of children during her years at the library.

“Each day, Charlene would welcome kids to the magical space called the Children’s Room and helped children discover the stories of kings, queens, dragons, brave children, good dogs and heroes throughout the centuries,” Davis wrote in a release.

Davis said Wagner worked through a leaky roof pooling water into buckets, cold winters when the heat was inadequate, sweltering summers with no air conditioning and the construction and renovation of the children’s room. She encouraged people to stop by and say goodbye to Wagner before she retires after Friday.

The library is at 152 Water St.
