June 14 is Flag Day. As a revered symbol of freedom and justice, the flag of the United States needs to be treated with the utmost respect. When a flag is worn and tattered, it should never be just thrown away. There is a formal procedure for the retirement and destruction of an American flag, according to a news release from American Legion Post 2.

Post 2 will perform this ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at the Legion hall at 213 Capitol St., in Augusta. The public is welcome to bring their flags which are no longer suitable for use to this official flag burning ceremony. Anyone unable to make the ceremony is welcome to drop flags off in the black box at the entrance to the Legion any time prior to Sunday. During the ceremony the Legion will be open and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
