“5K for Jay” second annual run/walk/crawl event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29 at the American Legion Hall in Newport.

Capt. John “Jay” Brainard, 26, of Newport, was killed in action facing the enemy in Wardac Province, Afghanistan, Memorial Day, May 28, 2012.

Brainard was a Patriot who believed in the Constitution and had a strong love for his Country. He gave his life unselfishly for the cause of freedom. He was known for his smile and his will to help people feel better about themselves through encouragement and kindness. The money raised will be for those who aspire to live up to the same standards and are enrolled in the ROTC or a military college; one to Nokomis, one to Foxcroft Academy, with the remaining going to those enrolled into ROTC programs at various academic or military colleges, according to a news release from his family.

The race, held rain or shine, will start at 9 a.m. A cookout, by donation, is planned after the race for all runners along with family and friends. Those who attend can also participate in a 50/50 raffle and giveaway drawings.

Preregistration is recommended by Saturday, Aug. 15. Cost for preregistered runners is $15 for children 18 and younger, and $20 for adults. Registration the day will be from 8 to 9 a.m. The cost on race day is $20 for children 18 and younger, and $25 for adults. T-shirts will be provided.
