A police standoff in Auburn ended peacefully late Thursday night with a man being taken into protective custody and sent to St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston for treatment.

Auburn police tweeted that the standoff with a depressed man in a house in the area of 531 North River Road ended without violence.

Earlier in the evening, police said an armed, suicidal man was refusing to come out of his home. A state police negotiator was called in to help. The man was believed to have several weapons in the home.

The standoff ended around 10 p.m.
