Maine State Police stopped a couple from Massachusetts in a rental car and subsequently arrested the passenger on drug charges, according to WCSH-TV.
The Portland TV station reported that police pulled the car over on Moosehead Trail in Newport on Friday night, during a R.I.D.E. team operation. Funded by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, the R.I.D.E. team of law enforcement officers is trained to detect impaired drivers.
Finding the couple’s stories to be suspicious, police said they conducted interviews and a K-9 search of the car, ultimately discovering six rocks of crack cocaine hidden in the sneaker of Gerald Urby, 33, of Boston. He was arrested and charged with possession of crack/cocaine, a Class C felony, and taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.
Urby remained in custody Saturday. He was being held on $310 cash bail.
The driver, Shontina Rankin, 30, was not charged, WCSH reported.
