FARMINGTON — A former Farmington man was sentenced to five years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 18 five years ago.

Shawn Flagg, 40, of Stetson, was sentenced in Franklin County Superior Court to 10 years in the state prison with all but the five years suspended. He also is ordered to serve four years of probation once he is released and must register as a sex offender for 10 years, according to court documents. Another five-year prison term was added for tampering with the victim. That sentence will run at the same time as the class A felony sexual assault conviction.

Flagg pleaded guilty Monday to sexually assaulting the girl in February 2010. He was charged in January on a charge of gross sexual assault against a minor, a class A felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison. Flagg, who is originally from Farmington, was interviewed at the Penobscot County Jail, where he was facing other charges not connected to the sexual assault charge, and later was charged.

He was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury in May.

The girl was someone for whose long-term care Flagg was responsible. Court documents indicate that the sexual assault was “by compulsion,” meaning that it took place by force or by the threat of force.

Another sexual assault charge against Flagg was dismissed in exchange for the plea agreement.

Flagg also pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and to a charge of domestic violence stalking against a member of his household, according to court documents. Sentencing on all of the charges is to run concurrent with the sexual assault conviction.
