NEW SHARON — A special town meeting will be held Wednesday in the Town Office building on School Lane to decide several questions, including whether key municipal positions should be appointed rather than elected.

Voters will act on eight items on the town meeting warrant. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

Residents will be asked to change the town clerk and town tax collector positions from elected to appointed. Under the town’s current system, voters elect the clerk and tax collector directly, but if the change is approved on Wednesday, the positions will be appointed by the board of selectmen.

Voters will also vote on whether to authorize the selectmen to dispose of town property, enter into a multi-year contract for sanding, plowing and snow removal in town, set town office hours, and rent out available space in the town office and use the revenue for administrative expenses.

Voters will also be asked to authorize transferring $1,800 voters approved for the now-dissolved New Sharon Historical Society to the town as a trustee of historical items. The selectmen recently created a five-person New Sharon Historical Committee to advise the selectmen on the maintenance and care of the historical items transferred to the town from the society at the 2015 town meeting in March.
