WATERVILLE — Motorists can expect some traffic changes in the coming week as one project in the city winds down and another on the highway starts up.

Starting Thursday, the new Western Avenue bridge will reopen over Messalonskee Stream, according to city officials. The bridge has been closed since work started June 16 to remove the old bridge and build a new one, detouring motorists around a key link in the city between Cool Street and that section of Western Avenue.

Stetson & Watson, which has been doing the bridge work, will continue work and there may be occasional lane closures there, according to the city.

Meanwhile, night paving is slated to start Monday, Aug. 31, on the Messalonskee Stream Bridge on Interstate 95 in Waterville, according to the Department of Transportation. Work in the northbound lanes will result in intermittent lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to the department. That paving job is expected to be done by Sept. 6.
