BAR HARBOR — The National Park Service is opening a new campground that will be part of Acadia National Park.
The park service says the opening of Schoodic Woods Campground marks the end of a years-long effort to protect 1,600 acres of land that abut Acadia. An anonymous buyer using the name Schoodic Woods LLC bought the land in 2011 and spent the last two years constructing the campground and 8.5 miles of bike paths and four miles of hiking trails.
The buyer donated a conservation easement of more than 1,400 of the acres to the federal government in 2013.
The park service is inviting the public to the grand opening of the campground on Sept. 2. It will be open for self-guided tours starting at 3:30 p.m. The campground has 94 sites.
